8 Week Mindfulness Course (MBSR)

Stress Reduction through Mindful Awareness

This course teaches you how to bring your awareness to the present moment

through regular meditation, and to use this skill in your daily life.

The course aims to

  • assist you in taking better care of yourself,
  • increase your ability to relax and to
  • cope more effectively with both short and long-term stress,
  • face difficulties and illness with greater wisdom,
  • appreciate and enjoy the moments of your life more.

The Course involves

experiential training in the various Mindfulness Meditations.

You will be introduced to and learn the meditation practices in class and explore your experience. The skills you learn help to develop awareness of body sensations, thoughts and feelings which are essential for coping successfully with stress, anxiety, low mood and many other difficulties you might encounter in your life.

When we are curious about our experience our focus and perspective changes. We become more aware of the whole situation and less caught up in our own negative processes. We begin to have a new kindness and gentleness towards ourselves, and a lightness and humour towards our difficulties. We are able to choose approaches to life's challenges which become increasingly effective the more regularly we practice.

Between classes you will have the opportunity to practice at home, supported by CDs or MP3s

and a workbook. This home practice is an essential part of the course and people who commit themselves to one hour of practice a day benefit most from doing the course.

Time will be given in each class to the exploration of experience with the practices carried out at home between classes, providing you with guidance and support and helping you through any difficulties which might arise.

You will also be invited to follow some exercises for yourself and also in pairs in the class, so that you are able to notice habitual and often unhelpful reaction patterns and how to introduce new and more appropriate ways of responding.

The course is offered to groups, individuals and as a distance learning course. It includes:

an individual orientation session,

Eight 2.25 hour long class sessions,

(Eight 1-hour sessions for individuals and distance learners),

a one experiential day on a Saturday or Sunday towards the end of the course,

The present is the only time that any of us have to be alive – to know anything – to perceive – to learn – to act – to change – to heal.
